On June 5, 2025, the European Commission unveiled the outlines of its European Oceans Pact.
This document contains a comprehensive strategy on maritime issues aimed at “better protecting the oceans, promoting a prosperous blue economy, and supporting the well-being of people living in coastal areas.”
The text highlights six priorities, namely
- Protecting and restoring ocean health
- Boosting the competitiveness of the EU sustainable blue economy
- Supporting coastal, island communities and outermost regions
- Advancing ocean research, knowledge, skills and innovation
- Enhancing maritime security and defence
- Strengthening EU Ocean diplomacy and international ocean governance
In 2027, the European Commission will present an “Oceans Act” aimed at enshrining the major objectives of this new strategy into European law, including the strict protection of 30% of the EU’s maritime waters by 2030, 10% of which must be protected.
