On June 5, 2025, the European Commission unveiled the outlines of its European Oceans Pact.
This document contains a comprehensive strategy on maritime issues aimed at « better protecting the oceans, promoting a prosperous blue economy, and supporting the well-being of people living in coastal areas. »
The text highlights six priorities, namely
- Protecting and restoring ocean health
- Boosting the competitiveness of the EU sustainable blue economy
- Supporting coastal, island communities and outermost regions
- Advancing ocean research, knowledge, skills and innovation
- Enhancing maritime security and defence
- Strengthening EU Ocean diplomacy and international ocean governance
In 2027, the European Commission will present an « Oceans Act » aimed at enshrining the major objectives of this new strategy into European law, including the strict protection of 30% of the EU’s maritime waters by 2030, 10% of which must be protected.
