The World Meteorological Organization published its annual report on the state of the climate on March 23, 2026.
The report confirms that the period 2015–2025 has been the warmest 11-year period ever recorded.
The Earth’s energy imbalance is the highest recorded in sixty-five years.
The ocean continues to warm and absorb carbon dioxide. For the past two decades, it has absorbed each year the equivalent of about eighteen times the annual energy consumption of humanity.
According to the report, the annual extent of Arctic sea ice has reached a historically low level, Antarctic sea ice the third lowest ever recorded, and glacier melting has continued unabated.
Extreme weather events affect millions of people and cost billions.
